Books drive revolutions, shape societies and influence culture. But how books achieve this is a complex story. This lecture systematically explores the question of how books structure societies and societies shape books. It does so by examining psychological, social scientific and historical phenomena and findings relating to this connection between books and society. The lecture focuses on our current society and the connections between social structure, lifestyle and books. Who reads what in our society, who does not read and why not, who reads a lot, and what music and art are highly valued alongside books? What forms of communitisation and socialisation can be observed? The lecture provides an overview of the latest developments in the world of books, looking at manga as well as New Adult, AI and academic journals.Dates
