Open PhD positions

In the DFG-funded project "Scalable Reading of 'Collected Works' of the 18th Century, exemplified by Friedrich-von-Hagedorn-Werkausgaben", there are

two open PhD positions (TV-L E 13, 65%)

for three years with immediate effect.

The project uses a combination of approaches from literary studies, book history and digital humanities to investigate the book type of the Collected Works, which has decisively shaped notions of authorship as well as processes of canonisation. Using Friedrich von Hagedorn's (1708-1754) editions of his works as examples, the project will explore how these were compiled in the course of the 18th century and prepared for specific markets and audiences.

Position 1 is held by Prof. Dr. Gabriel Viehhauser (Digital Humanities, University of Stuttgart). This position will use digital humanities methods (document analysis, text reuse, sequence alignment) that can be modified and applied to a corpus-based study of the editions of Friedrich von Hagedorn's works. Knowledge of digital humanities is expected, a basic understanding of 18th century literary history is desirable.

Position 2 is held by Prof. Dr. Philip Ajouri (Book Studies, JGU Mainz). Here, the editions of works and their publishers are examined from a book-scientific point of view and the results from the computer-assisted comparisons are evaluated in a qualitative-contextualising manner. Knowledge of book studies (publishing, book trade) of the 18th century and an understanding of 18th century poetics and literature are expected.

For both positions, the ability to work in a team and the willingness to engage in interdisciplinary cooperation are expected. We aim to increase the proportion of women in the academic field and are therefore particularly interested in applications from women. People with severe disabilities will be given preferential consideration if they are suitable.
